The third Hugo Geiger Prize was awarded to Elena Lindemann. During her research placement at the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology IGB, she developed a simple alternative method of gene expression analysis.

Elena Lindemann is awarded with the third Hugo Geiger Prize by Hans-Jörg Bullinger, president of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft.
DNA fragments are separated in the gel in two dimensions. The comparison of the spot pattern provides information on genes that are specifically expressed.

During her research placement at the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology IGB, she developed a simple alternative method of gene expression analysis for which a patent is now pending. “Untill now, gene expression studies have usual required a fully sequenced and annotated genome of the organism to be examined. High-resolution two-dimensional cDNA electrophoresis now enables complex genome-wide transcription profiles to be displayed and analyzed as spot patterns. The system does not require the knowledge of genomic sequences in order to perform differential gene expression analyses making its application universal for any eukaryotic organism. It is quite sensitive just requiring as few as one microgram of total RNA per analysis.” says Lindemann.
