CarboSurf – New processes for the fermentative production of glycolipid biosurfactants and sialylated carbohydrates

CarboSurf is a project of the Bio-Based Industries Joint Undertakings (BBI JU). With 6 million Euro budget ,this project aims to develop new processes and solve bottlenecks in the fermentative production of biosurfactants and special carbohydrates.

Eleven partners from four European countries are working together during the three-year project period: research and technology organisations, an open innovation pilot plant, four medium-sized biotechnology companies and three large industrial companies. The project receives funding from the first call of the BBI JU under the Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.

Within the CarboSurf project, the Fraunhofer IGB is concerned with the selection of suitable production strains for the efficient production of specific glycolipid variants, the investigation of glycolipid formation at genome and transcriptome level, genetic optimization and the design of technically scalable fermentation processes.
