Three-Dimensional (3D) Animal Skin Models

We develop reconstituted skin models based on primary immortalized or primary skin cells of animal origin as in-vitro test systems. These 3D skin models are suitable for evaluating the efficacy and possible toxic side effects of therapeutic and skin care products on animal skin – completely without animal testing.

Reconstituted canine skin models

are reconstituted dermis, epidermis and full-thickness skin models constructed from immortalized primary or primary canine skin cells.

Reconstituted equine skin models

are reconstituted dermis, epidermis and full-thickness skin models constructed from immortalized primary or primary equine skin cells.

Animal skin models for testing veterinary drugs and fur care products

Challenge: lack of in-vitro tissue models for testing veterinary products

A large number of different in-vitro tissue models are available for risk and efficacy studies in the preclinical development of human pharmaceuticals, but also for product development of cosmetics and chemical substances. The aim of these models is to reduce animal testing and to be able to make specific statements on the risk and efficacy of substances and products for humans. In contrast, animal experiments or ex-vivo tissue from living animals are still used for risk and efficacy studies in the veterinary field and for the development of care products for animals due to a lack of suitable in-vitro tissue models.

Similar to our human reconstituted dermis, epidermis and full-thickness skin models, we have also established corresponding in-vitro models for animals, for example for dogs, from immortalized primary or primary cells.

Our development

With our decades of experience in the development of human cell lines, the establishment of human reconstituted 3D skin models and working to the highest quality standards, we establish animal reconstituted dermis, epidermis and full-thickness skin models.

Advantage: physiological 3D skin model

Our animal 3D skin models are based on specifically immortalized primary or primary skin cells of animal origin, which have been isolated from biopsies of medically indicated resections of healthy skin. By using immortalized primary cells, our skin models are donor-independent, reproducible and available at any time. Our reconstituted canine epidermis and full-thickness skin models have a horny layer and correspond to the in-vivo skin of the dog.

Application areas

Our animal skin models are versatile and can be used to assess the efficacy and safety of animal dermatology products and veterinary pharmaceuticals via

  • The determination of toxicity,
  • The analysis of the skin penetration of a substance and
  • The development and preclinical testing of active ingredients and skin care products

Spectrum of services

We offer a wide range of services related to our animal skin models, which we carry out in modern laboratories on behalf of and in close cooperation with and for our customers:

  • Conducting studies and substance screenings
  • Development of innovative and complex animal skin models including
    • Isolation of primary cells
    • Production of genetically modified cell lines (stable and transient)
    • Reporter cell lines with different intracellular and secreted reporters
    • 3D tissue reconstitution
    • Phenotypic and functional characterization of models
  • Shipping of animal skin models

Analysis methods

Our animal 3D skin models make it possible to investigate the effects of chemicals, active ingredients and products on the tissue architecture and physiological properties of animal skin. The analyses can be performed on the entire full-thickness skin model as well as separately in dermis and epidermis. We offer the following analysis methods:

  • Vitality measurements, for example using the MTT test (colorimetric test), alamarBlue(TM)
  • Histological and immunohistochemical staining of tissue thin sections
  • Protein analyses using Western blot
  • RNA and DNA analyses using PCR or qPCR and sequencing

In-vitro canine skin equivalents for veterinary therapeutics testing

Veterinary drugs or dermatological care products for pets are often used without prior testing for efficacy or human products are applied. In the WowWowSkin project, the IGB is developing an in-vitro model for dog skin to allow standardized testing of pet therapeutics and care products.
